Shopify Development Company in India — Headless Builds and Honest Advice
We build headless Shopify storefronts, custom themes and the India-specific pieces Shopify does not handle well on its own: GST-compliant invoicing, COD controls, and the logistics integrations Indian merchants actually need.
We will also tell you when a standard Shopify theme is the better purchase. That happens more often than any agency in this market admits, and section 4 explains how to tell.
What we do, and what we don't
Clear boundaries on the engineering we deliver versus what to hire specialists for.
✓We build:
Headless Shopify storefronts
Shopify as the commerce backend, a custom frontend for speed and control
Custom Shopify themes
Built from scratch for performance, not a marketplace theme with changes
India-specific extensions
GST invoicing, COD and RTO controls, Shiprocket and Delhivery integration
Shopify migrations
From WooCommerce, Magento or a custom store, with URLs and rankings preserved
Performance rebuilds
For stores where the theme and app stack have made the site slow
✕We don't:
Small theme tweaks or app installations.
A Shopify specialist will do it faster and cheaper. We are not the right call for a week of changes.
Shopify app development.
Different discipline.
Marketplace theme customisation.
If your plan is to buy a theme and modify it, hire someone who does that well — it is a real skill and it is not what we do.
Headless builds that should not happen.
See the next section.
Should you go headless? Usually not.
Headless Shopify means keeping Shopify as the commerce engine — products, checkout, orders, payments — while replacing the storefront with a custom frontend.
It is genuinely powerful. It is also several times the cost of a standard build, once you count development, the CMS you will end up adding, the apps you have to replace because they only inject into Liquid themes, and ongoing maintenance. Published cost comparisons put a headless build in a completely different bracket from vanilla Shopify — not a percentage more, a multiple.
Stay on standard Shopify when:
Your catalogue is a few hundred products with straightforward filtering
A well-built theme already gets you acceptable Core Web Vitals
Your content needs are covered by product pages and a blog
You depend on apps — most of Shopify's app ecosystem injects into Liquid themes and simply does not exist headless
You are early and every rupee should go into product or acquisition
Headless earns its cost when:
Page speed is measurably limiting conversion and you have the data to show it
You need editorial content and commerce in one system, with a real CMS
You are building something Shopify's storefront genuinely cannot do — a configurator, a complex B2B flow, a multi-brand architecture
You are at a volume where a conversion improvement of a percentage point pays for the build
A caution worth stating plainly:
A large catalogue is not by itself a reason to go headless. For fifty thousand SKUs with standard filtering, a good theme plus a proper search layer will usually beat a headless build — and cost a fraction.
We will look at your store, your Core Web Vitals and your numbers, and tell you which side of this you are on. If the answer is “keep what you have”, that is what you will hear.
Hydrogen or Next.js: the honest comparison
Most Indian agencies will recommend whichever stack they already use. Here is the actual trade-off.
If you do go headless, there are two sensible paths.
Shopify Hydrogen is Shopify's own React framework, built on React Router, deploying to Oxygen — Shopify's edge hosting, available on plans from Basic upward. Shopify's commerce primitives are built in, the Storefront API integration is well documented, and you are inside Shopify's ecosystem end to end.
Next.js with the Storefront API means wiring the commerce layer yourself, deploying to Vercel or similar, and having the whole React ecosystem available.
| Criteria | Hydrogen | Next.js |
|---|---|---|
| Commerce primitives | Built in | You wire them |
| Hosting | Oxygen, included from Basic upward | Vercel or similar, separate cost |
| Content management | Metafields — you will likely add a CMS anyway | Any headless CMS |
| Ecosystem and tooling | Smaller; more limited logging and tooling | Large; mature deployment and preview tooling |
| Right when | Pure Shopify storefront, commerce-led | Content and commerce together, or non-Shopify parts in the same app |
Our honest recommendation:
For a storefront that is purely commerce, Hydrogen is usually the better default — it is purpose-built, the hosting is included, and you are not maintaining plumbing Shopify already wrote.
We work in Next.js more often, and the reason to pick it should be your requirement, not our preference: content-heavy stores where editorial and commerce sit together, multi-brand or multi-region architectures, or products where the store is one part of a larger application.
If the honest answer for your store is Hydrogen, we will build it in Hydrogen or tell you to find a Hydrogen specialist.
GST-compliant invoicing on Shopify in India
Shopify is a global platform, and its native order confirmations are not Indian GST invoices. Merchants routinely discover this after launch, usually when their accountant asks for something Shopify does not produce — HSN codes per line item being the most common gap.
The market answer is one of several third-party GST invoicing apps. They work, and for many merchants an app is the correct, cheapest solution — we will say so.
Where a build is the better answer:
You need invoicing inside a headless storefront. App-generated invoices assume the Liquid theme. Headless means building it.
Your invoice series has to match your accounting system. Tally or Zoho with a specific numbering scheme an app cannot follow.
B2B orders with buyer GSTIN capture. Collecting and validating the buyer's GSTIN at checkout and putting it on the invoice.
Place-of-supply logic your catalogue needs. Correct CGST/SGST versus IGST split per order, with the rate at time of transaction retained so returns are handled correctly.
Multi-entity or multi-state operations with separate GSTINs and separate invoice series.
What we build:
HSN codes maintained per product, correct tax split by place of supply, compliant invoice numbering, buyer GSTIN capture where relevant, and invoice data pushed to your accounting system rather than exported by hand each month.
COD, RTO and shipping on Shopify
Cash on delivery is where Indian stores lose margin, and Shopify's defaults do not manage it for you. What can be added:
Partial prepay on COD
A token advance at checkout, the single highest-leverage change most Indian stores are not making
Pincode serviceability checks
Validated against your carrier's API before the order is accepted
OTP verification on COD orders
Triggered automatically above your chosen threshold to eliminate fake orders
Configurable COD limits
By order value, category and pincode, configurable by your operations team
Logistics partner integrations
Shiprocket, Delhivery, Ekart and Blue Dart integration — rates at checkout, labels, tracking pages
NDR automation
Reaching the customer with a reschedule link before the courier gives up
RTO reporting in admin
By category, pincode, value and courier to make data-backed margin decisions

Frequently asked questions
Direct answers on headless viability, cost, Hydrogen vs Next.js, GST invoicing, and full code ownership.
Probably not. Standard Shopify with a well-built theme is the right answer for most stores — a few hundred products, acceptable Core Web Vitals, content needs covered by products and a blog. Headless earns its cost when speed is measurably limiting conversion, you need content and commerce in one system, or Shopify's storefront cannot do something you actually need. We will look at your numbers and tell you which applies.
